Lightweight Concrete
Lightweight Insulating Concrete Roof Insulation Systems have proven to be valuable in meeting sustainable building objectives by reducing mechanical and thermal stresses on the roof membrane resulting in increased service life.
A substrate’s heat capacity directly affects the temperature of the roof membrane it is in contact with. Heat capacity is the amount of heat an object can hold. Rigid foam plastic board stock insulations with high R-values are intended to decrease heat transfer between the interior and exterior of a building. They have less ability to absorb and release heat than traditional substrates such as wood and concrete.
As a result, the roof membrane is exposed to higher heat for longer periods of time. Increasing the membrane temperature 18°F (10°C) doubles the aging rate (The Arrhenius Equation) of the roof membrane. Thus, using a substrate with a high heat capacity helps to pull heat away from the roof membrane.
The "thermal inertia" or mass effect of light weight insulating concrete roof insulation systems also reduces extreme temperature fluctuations and the resulting thermal stresses that cause membrane fatigue failure. The graph below shows the thermal lag provided by lightweight insulting concrete roof insulation versus polyisocyanurate systems. This has the added benefit of reducing fluctuations in HVAC loading requirements.
Building envelope design and construction issues, including related costing models, are simplified by using Lightweight Insulating Concrete Roof Insulation Systems.
Placement of lightweight insulating concrete is an extremely enconomical method of enhancing the roof diaphragm performance of steel deck. The effect is to increase the shear strength and shear stiffness of the metal panels without the use of additional bracing in the interior of the building. Following is an example:

The ability of light weight insulating concrete roof insulation systems to optimize the amount of steel used in roof assembly construction minimizes the material resource requirements for steel components such as metal deck and bar joists. In addition to enhancing shear strength and shear stiffness, incorporating a lightweight insulating concrete deck system can have significant financial impact by reducing metal deck cost.
| Example: 50,000 sq. foot project - metal cost (G-60 galv.) | |||
| 2007 | 2008 | 2009 | |
| B-20 | $1.00 / ft2 | $1.31 / ft2 | $0.82 / ft2 |
| B-22 | $0.80 / ft2 | $1.27 / ft2 | $0.69 / ft2 |
| 26 ga/inch | $0.55 / ft2 | $0.89 / ft2 | $0.48 / ft2 |
Numerous regulatory approval listings are availbable for Lightweight Insulating Concrete Roof Insulation Systems. Please check Factory Mutual RoofNav, Underwriter's Laboratories, and Miami Dade NOA listings for specific requirements.

Green Roofing
If lightweight insulating Concrete were any greener, it would have leaves.
Sustainablility is a cornerstone of the green initiatives spreading across the country. And no roof insulation is more sustainable than Lightweight Insulatin Concrete. In fact, once a Lighweight Insulating Concrete System is poured in place, it stays there a long, long time.
Unlike disposable rigid polyisocyanurate insulation, Lightweight Insulating Concrete can be reroofed indefinitely, which dramatically reduces both the environmental cost of filling landfills with discarded polyisocyanurate and the life-cycle cost of the roof. And the system is very effective in moderating roof membrane temperatures, thereby extending the membrane's life.
The Lightweight Insulating Concrete System conbines the unique properties of lightweight insulating concrete and premium expanded polystyrene foam insulation board. by encapsulating the insulation board in insulating concrete, the system provides fire protection, prevents air infiltration, bonds the system to the substrate, and creates a monolithic, reroofable surface ideal for installation of the roof membrane.
The role of the roof is expanding. As you work "green," consider Lightweight Insulating Concrete Systems - a permanent insulation solution with a performance history of over 70 years. For more information on Lightweight Insulating Concrete, call 905-673-0615 .

Service Department
Bothwell-Accurate provides 24x7x365 emergency service, on an as-needed basis, or as part of our preventative maintenance program.
Like many other building components, roofs will be subject to climatic and environmental conditions that contribute to wear and tear – but most roofs fail not from age but from neglect. One of the easiest ways to save money on roofing is to move to a roofing maintenance program. Many of our major corporate and institutional clients have added up to 50% more service life to their roofs and realized significant savings on costly repairs and premature replacement.
Drawing on the knowledge and experience we’ve gained over the last 80 years, Bothwell-Accurate has a strong and effective set of programs for roofing maintenance and management. Our Roof Management Program is constructed around a 20-point preventative maintenance and repair schedule, and provides building owners to identify and eliminate existing and potential roofing problems, reducing overall maintenance costs as well as those unexpected costs that play havoc with budget management.

Hot Rubberized Asphalt
This liquefied material is used in inverted roofs where insulation and ballast rest on top of the “pour-and-cooled” two ply membrane. It bonds to the substrate forming a monolithic skin over the roof, creating a vapor and air barrier. Its elastomeric base gives the Hot Rubberized Asphalt roofing system a “self-healing” property.
Cold Applied Systems
Multiple plies of organic or inorganic felts can be laid in the roofing system using cold adhesives. This can be advantageous when the use of hot materials is not practical.
Single Ply Systems
Single ply membrane systems are lightweight, clean, and rapidly installed. A number of systems are available in elastomeric and polymeric base compounds. Working only with proven products from the top manufacturers, we install single-ply systems including:
PVC thermo-plastics
Rubber / elastomers (EPDM)
TPO Single Ply
Hybrids such as heat-weldable rubber membrane products
